Gina Carano has finally settled her long lawsuit with Walt Disney and Lucasfilm, filed after her termination from ‘The Mandalorian’ with support from Elon Musk. Here’s everything to know about her.
Actress Gina Carano has settled her lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm after she was fired from Star Wars franchise spin-off The Mandalorian.
She was dropped from the cast in 2021 following comments she made comparing being a Republican in the US to being a Jew during the Holocaust.
Ms Carano, a former MMA fighter who played Cara Dune in the Disney+ series, shared the news of the settlement on X, writing “I hope this brings some healing to the force.”

The agreement, which has not been made public, comes after her case gained support and funding from Elon Musk.
Ms Carano described the settlement as the “best outcome for all parties involved,” adding she was “excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter”.
She also thanked Musk, saying she’d never met the tech billionaire but he stepped in to do this “Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit”.
“Yes, I’m smiling”, she signed off.
The actress originally sued for wrongful termination and sexual discrimination, claiming that two of her male co-stars had made similar posts and faced no penalty.
She had sought $75,000 (£60,000) in damages and to be recast in the popular series.
Lucasfilm had condemned her comments in 2021 for “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities”.
In a statement released since the settlement, the production company said that it looks forward to “identifying opportunities to work together”.
The company described Ms Carano as someone who “was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff. She worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect,” it added.
Ms Carano is a former mixed martial arts fighter and has faced pushback in the past for deriding mask-wearing policies during the Covid pandemic and making false claims of voter fraud in the 2020 US presidential election, which Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden.
Who is Gina Carano?
Gina Carano first rose to fame as a fierce competitor in the world of Mixed Martial Arts. She was often called the ‘face of women’s MMA’ during her active years from 2006 to 2009, and she made history with Cris Cyborg in the first female-headlined Strikeforce event. However, she retired with a 7–1 record, and she transitioned to Hollywood. Since August 2009, Gina has not fought, and she has not been scheduled to take part in any forthcoming events.
Gina began her journey in Hollywood with Ring Girls, where she, along with four other American women, had to fight with the best Muay Thai fighters in the world. Soon she landed into mainstream lead roles in the 2011 film, Haywire, followed by Fast & Furious 6, and Deadpool. Despite being a part of leading franchises, her bigger role came as ‘Cara Dune’ in The Mandalorian, which brought her mainstream attention and a massive fan following.

Gina Carano’s personal life
Behind the spotlight, Carano’s personal life has always kept fans and media intrigued. She is presently in a long-term relationship with former kickboxing champion, Kevin Ross. The couple first dated in the mid-2000s, and after parting ways, again reunited in 2015. He had played a major role in Gina’s early fighting career and supported her transition into MMA. In a few of his social media posts, he described her as an ‘inspiration’ and his ‘best friend’. However, before Ross, Gina had a highly publicised relationship with actor, Henry Cavill. The two dated on and off between 2012 and 2014, and even adopted a dog together before they went ahead on different ways.
Why Gina Carano Was Dropped by Disney and Lucasfilm
Gina Carano had filed a lawsuit against Walt Disney and Lucasfilm for wrongfully terminating her contract for The Mandalorian. In this Disney+ Star Wars TV series, she played ‘Cara Dune’ in the first two seasons. She had argued that the production houses fired her for expressing her political beliefs on social media. It all started when she made controversial posts about COVID-19 vaccines, the 2020 U.S. election, and a meme that led to Holocaust comparisons.
After receiving backlash, Disney cut ties with her in 2021. The actress accused in her lawsuit that she was unfairly targeted and silenced. However, after a long legal battle and efforts from tech billionaire, Elon Musk, who funded her legal fees, she could settle the matter. She expressed her gratitude towards him while their terms of the settlement remain undisclosed.

Inside the Gina Carano Controversy
Gina Carano had put up a string of controversial posts, after which she was fired. The actor consistently took a stance against Covid vaccines throughout the pandemic. She also implied the 2020 election was a result of ‘voter fraud’ echoing President Donald Trump‘s claims.
She posted misinformation on both matters, as per Entertainment Weekly, but things came to a head when Carano posted a meme that compared having different political opinions to being Jewish in Nazi Germany.

Carano defended her post, saying it “just made sense — don’t hate your neighbor. Before the Nazis were as powerful as they became, you had to make it OK to hate this person next to you. That’s how we get to dangerous places. And history does repeat itself.” Prior to this, Carano also courted controversy, when she mocked the use of pronouns on social media. Not only did co-star Pedro Pascal speak to her at the time, but there was concerted effort from Lucasfilm and Disney HR to media train Carano and send her to a ‘reeducation camp’.
Elon Musk Stands Up for Gina Carano
Elon Musk backed Carano’s lawsuit, which she filed in California federal court. Speaking of his help at the time, Carano said “I think it’s pretty incredible what he is doing. A lot of billionaires put their money into buying islands and building bunkers. Elon Musk is using his money to fight massive injustice battles,” as per EW.
I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm @disney @Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the force.

After the case was settled too, Carano took a moment to thank Musk.
“I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk, a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit. Thank you Mr. Musk and @X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return,” she said.
Notably, terms of the settlement have not been disclosed. In 2021, Lucasfilm said it had no plans for any future work with Carano and that her “social-media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” At the time, Carano’s talent agent, United Talent Agency, and publicity firm, ID Public Relations, both said they were no longer working with her.
