The former first daughter, Ashley Biden, has filed for divorce from her plastic surgeon husband, Dr. Howard Krein.
The two were married for more than 13 years before Ashley Biden, 44, filed for divorce Monday in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Ashley quickly commemorated the occasion on social media.
In a since-expired Instagram Story, she was walking through the park as she was flashing a thumbs-up sign to the song “Freedom” by Beyoncé. She also shared a quote on her Story that read, “New life, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” which was set to the song “Freedom Time” by Lauryn Hill.
Biden and Krein were married in Greenville, Delaware, in 2012. The ceremony took place at the same St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church where Ashley Biden was baptized.

The couple originally met in 2010 through Ashley Biden’s late brother, Beau, who died from cancer in 2015. Following their marriage, they moved into a $1.3 million home in Philadelphia, where Krein works as an otolaryngologist and plastic surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Ashley Biden briefly discussed her father’s involvement in her wedding as she introduced the former president at the Democratic National Convention in 2024.
“At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,” she said. “He was riding around in his John Deere 4-wheeler, fixing the place settings, arranging the plants, and by the way, he was very emotional.”
Who is Howard Krein?
Krein’s life and career go way beyond his marriage. Born and raised in New Jersey, he built his name as a top otolaryngologist and facial plastic surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He is also a professor in facial, plastic and reconstructive surgery, plus co-director of the university’s facial aesthetic center. Over the years, he’s trained many young doctors, balancing surgical work with teaching.
Before medicine, Krein had a rugged, hands-on early life. He took part in weekly rodeo competitions as a teen and even volunteered as a firefighter. His academic path was just as intense, earning both an MD and a PhD in cell and developmental biology.

Ashley Biden and Howard Krein’s relationship timeline
Ashley and Dr Krein married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, two years after being introduced by her late brother, Beau Biden. Krein had proposed in late 2011 during a trip to Big Sur in California, after getting permission from Joe Biden, who was vice president at the time. Biden had described Krein as “the right guy” and called Ashley “a helluva woman.”
Their wedding took place at St Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church, where Ashley was baptized, with around 200 guests in attendance.
Ashley and Krein’s story began in 2010. Her late brother, Beau Biden, introduced them, according to People. Krein proposed her within a year, after getting Joe Biden’s blessing. The duo got married in June 2012 at St. Joseph on the Brandywine in Delaware, in a warm ceremony blending Jewish and Catholic traditions.
During the 2020 US presidential race, Krein quietly advised the Biden campaign on health matters in the early COVID-19 months. At the same time, he was chief medical officer for StartUp Health, a health-tech firm, which some critics said could be a conflict of interest.

Messages in music and words
That was not her only post with a pointed soundtrack. Ashley also shared Lauryn Hill’s “Freedom Time” alongside a quote reading, “New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before”.
Other Stories that day carried different tones. She posted a Bob Marley quote, “Let your smile change the world but don’t let the world change your smile,” as well as an astrology-themed graphic about a full moon portal, adding her own note: “The universe has my back”.
Later, her feed turned to family. She shared snapshots from what appeared to be an event honoring her late half-brother Beau Biden and his foundation, attended by Joe Biden himself. Over one image of her father speaking with a guest, she wrote, “Thank you for the support for my brother/his foundation + the sweet/touching moments of appreciation for Dad’s service. Still doing what he does best…and no one does it better. Grateful.”
What does Ashley Biden do?
The youngest daughter of the former US President received a master’s degree from the School of Social Policy and Practice, University of Pennsylvania, in 2010. She is best known for her social work.
At first, she wanted to be a therapist, but she later said in a 2023 interview that it was not the right choice for her. “It was very traumatic,” she told Elle about her internship at the Seaford House.
After completing her education, Ashley went on to join Delaware Center for Justice, a nonprofit organization. She first served as its associate executive director in 2012 and was later named the executive director. She left the organization in 2019 and then started working on her father’s campaign trail, according to Parade magazine.
Besides this, she is famous as a fashion designer and came out with her Livelihood brand in 2017.
