OpenAI on Thursday night introduced ChatGPT 5, or rather GPT-5, which is its next-generation AI system. The company says that ChatGPT 5 brings PhD-level knowledge in every subject to everyone.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has predicted that India could become the artificial intelligence (AI) giant’s largest market worldwide.
Altman’s statement came as OpenAI launched its next-generation model, ChatGPT-5. India is currently the company’s second-largest market behind the United States. The CEO called the Indians ‘remarkable’ in their use of AI.

“India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest market. It’s incredibly fast-growing, but what users are doing with AI, what citizens of India are doing with AI, is really quite remarkable,” Altman said during a media briefing.
The OpenAI CEO said he was excited to visit India in September and that his company was especially focused on bringing its product to the country.
“We’re especially focused on bringing products to India, working with local partners to make AI work great for India and make it more affordable for people across the country. We’ve been paying a lot of attention here given the rate of growth, and I am excited to come for a visit in September,” he said.
OpenAI launches ChatGPT-5
OpenAI on Thursday announced the launch of GPT-5, describing it as its “best model yet for coding and agentic tasks”.
“We’re releasing GPT-5 in three sizes in the API — gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano — to give developers more flexibility to trade off performance, cost, and latency. While GPT-5 in ChatGPT is a system of reasoning, non-reasoning, and router models, GPT-5 in the API platform is the reasoning model that powers maximum performance in ChatGPT. Notably, GPT-5 with minimal reasoning is a different model from the non-reasoning model in ChatGPT, and is better tuned for developers. The non-reasoning model used in ChatGPT is available as gpt-5-chat-latest,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, added that the new model significantly improves understanding across more than 12 Indian languages.
“GPT-5 significantly improves multilingual understanding across over 12 Indian languages, including regional languages. So that’s really exciting because as Sam mentioned, India is a priority market for us,” Turley said.
The rollout of GPT-5 began on August 7 for free, Plus, and Pro users, with Enterprise and Education users gaining access a week later.

Voice Mode Is Now Available To All Users
GPT-5’s Voice Mode has been rolled out universally, allowing users to engage in real-time conversations with the AI. In a live demo, it was shown that the AI could tailor its voice responses precisely as requested—for example, summarising Pride and Prejudice in a single word: “relationships.”
Customised Style Of Answers In Real-Time
GPT-5 lets users control how it thinks and responds. Prompts like “think harder” or “more precisely” can influence the quality and depth of its answers, offering a new level of personalisation and control over AI output.
Smarter & More Natural Creative Writing Output
When tasked with writing a eulogy for earlier GPT models, GPT-5 delivered content with emotional nuance and sensitivity. Compared to GPT-4o, which had a more factual tone, GPT-5’s output felt more human, expressive, and resonant.
Generates Complex Code & Functional Websites Quickly
During a live-stream demo, GPT-5 wrote over 200 lines of code within minutes. It created a fully functional website complete with visual design elements and embedded audio—specifically aimed at helping users learn French interactively with a partner.
Scientific Concepts & Generate Visuals
When asked to explain the Bernoulli effect, GPT-5 responded swiftly and clearly. It also demonstrated the ability to generate relevant visuals, although this took slightly longer—highlighting its expanded capability in visual reasoning and conceptual teaching.
Internal Reasoning
One standout feature of GPT-5 is its ability to show its internal reasoning while processing a prompt. This “thinking out loud” capability gives users insight into how the model arrives at conclusions, increasing user trust and engagement.
Improvements In Voice & Video Functionality
GPT-5 is part of OpenAI’s broader vision to advance voice and video interactions. The model has been trained to better understand spoken instructions, and future updates are expected to enhance its ability to respond in more conversational, context-aware ways.
How to Use ChatGPT 5
You can access ChatGPT 5 via the official ChatGPT app on mobile or web. Basic usage is available for free, while advanced tools-like file uploads, image generation, and code analysis-are included in the ChatGPT Plus plan. Just sign up or log in, and select GPT-4o to use the latest version.
Clash with other AI firm
Anthropic recently revoked OpenAI’s access to its application programming interface(API), claiming the company was violating its terms of service by using its coding tools ahead of GPT-5’s launch.
An OpenAI spokesperson said it was “industry standard” to evaluate other AI systems to assess their own progress and safety.
“While we respect Anthropic’s decision to cut off our API access, it’s disappointing considering our API remains available to them,” they added.
With a free tier for its new model, the company may be signalling a potential move away from the proprietary models that have previously dominated its offerings.
What’s New in ChatGPT 5?
On Monday, OpenAI revealed it was making changes to promote a healthier relationship between users and ChatGPT.
It said it would not give a definitive answer to questions such as, “Should I break up with my boyfriend?”
Instead, it would “help you think it through – asking questions, weighing pros and cons”, according to the blog post.
In May, OpenAI pulled a heavily-criticised update which made ChatGPT “overly flattering”, according to Sam Altman.
On a recent episode of OpenAI’s own podcast, Mr Altman said he was thinking about how people interact with his products.
“This is not all going to be good, there will still be problems,” he said.
“People will develop these somewhat problematic, or maybe very problematic, parasocial relationships [with AI]. Society will have to figure out new guardrails. But the upsides will be tremendous.”
Mr Altman is known to be a fan of the 2013 film Her, where a man develops a relationship with an AI companion.
In 2024, actress Scarlett Johansson, who voiced the AI companion in the film, said she was left “shocked” and “angered” after OpenAI launched a chatbot with an “eerily similar” voice to her own.

Yes and No. OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5 is available in five pricing tiers: Free, Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise.
Free Plan: The free plan offers basic access to GPT-5 with features like web search, voice mode, and limited file uploads.
The Plus plan: The $20/month Plus plan expands access with higher usage limits, advanced voice features, and limited Sora video generation.
The Pro plan: The $200/month Pro plan offers unlimited GPT-5 Pro access, enhanced compute power, advanced voice and video capabilities, extended agent access, and early feature previews. These tiers cater to everyone from casual users to professionals and enterprises seeking top-tier AI tools.
The Team plan is priced at $25 per user per month when billed annually, or $30 per user per month when billed monthly. For organisations requiring more advanced solutions, the Enterprise plan is available, but pricing is customised; interested teams must contact OpenAI’s sales department for details.
