On May 22, 2023, there was a massive explosion outside the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, the Pentagon.

The explosion occurred at approximately 10:00 AM EDT and caused significant damage to the Pentagon.  

There were also reports of injuries and casualties. 

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but 

initial reports suggest that it may have been caused by a truck bomb. 

The truck bomb detonated near the Pentagon's west side, which is located near the entrance to the building.

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, in 

Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. 

It was constructed on an accelerated schedule during World War II.

metonym for the Department of Defense and its leadership.
