Sophie Cunningham sustained an injury during Indiana Fever’s game against Connecticut Sun.
Popular forward Sophie Cunningham was taken to the locker room with a knee injury after a collision on Sunday during a 99-93 road win against the Sun.
Sophie Cunningham, a key part of the Fever, especially with Caitlin Clark out due to a groin injury, was standing under the basket playing defense when driving Sun guard Bria Hartley fell into her lower left leg after making a pass.
Sophie Cunningham, who could be seen yelling in pain, had to be helped to her feet and was later ruled out.
As soon as Hartley made contact with Sophie Cunningham’s lower right leg, the Fever standout immediately grabbed it and fell to the court.
Fever head coach Stephanie White didn’t have any update on Cunningham but said that her reaction after seeing the injury was “holy s–t.”
“Especially the way that she fell and how she was holding herself and how much pain Sophie Cunningham was in, at the time it’s like, ‘crap,’” she told reporters.
Cunningham had been assessed with a technical foul earlier in Sunday’s game during a tie-up with Leila Lacan.
Clark has been out for a month with a groin injury and the Fever are battling for their playoff lives, sitting in seventh place at 19-16 after winning the Commissioner’s Cup earlier this season.
Indiana will also be without Sydney Colson (torn ACL) and Aari McDonald (broken foot) for the rest of the season.
Cunningham has made headlines lately off the court by being critical of WNBA officials, particularly when it came to how they called a game for Wings rookie Paige Bueckers.

What happened?
Sophie Cunningham appears to have hurt her right knee, though the extent of the damage is not yet known. Fevers Coach Stephanie White reacted to the terrible injury and offered her perspective on how it unfolded on Sunday. However, Sophie Cunningham was not able to give an update on her condition.

“Especially the way that she fell and how she was holding herself and how much pain she was in, at the time it’s like, ‘crap,’” said White.
“And then you go down there, you see her and it’s like OK, I just want her to calm down and be able to regroup, and then it turns to problem solving, right?
“How do we put ourselves in a position to win? I think that’s maybe how I survive is going straight to problem solving. But this group, they’re special and I’m thankful for them.”
Will Sophie Cunningham miss the next Fever game?
Fever next play the Minnesota Lynx on August 23. That’s less than a week’s time for the next game. While Cunningham could very well be back in the thick of things if doctors give her a clean chit, a five-day margin is a little close to call when it comes to injuries.
Meanwhile, Fever won today’s game with Kelsey Mitchell putting up a fantastic performance. Sophie, injured, congratulated the player on an X post.
Cunningham’s injury, however, has riled her elder sister, Lindsey, who commented on X, “@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you.” Others have also posted “prayers up” for Cunningham in the wake of the basketball player’s injury.
How long could the recovery take?
While it is evident that Cunningham has hurt her right knee, the extent of the injury remains unclear, and will only become evident once doctors conduct a medical tests on the basketball player.
However, in the event that it is a knee sprain, Sophie Cunningham might find herself out for a few weeks, if it is nothing severe. This could turn into a few months, if she has a sprain which is serious, as per Cleveland Clinic. They also noted that knee sprains are common in basketball.
